2008 Paul Mathew Gamay Noir
Availability: Sold out.
Squire Vineyard is probably the oldest Gamay vineyard planted in a premium appellation in California.
By all rights it should have been ripped out years ago and planted to Cabernet Sauvignon which would be much more profitable for the owners.
I am very thankful that hasn't happened.
This two acre vineyard is located in Knight's Valley, just across the Sonoma county line north of Calistoga.
The vineyard is now approximately 60 years old and produces about 2 tons per acre.
The vines are head pruned and dry farmed.
The 2008 growing season was more difficult than previous years.
We had early spring frosts which affected the Vineyard, as well, there was an initial small crop which leads to a small production.
We did 100% carbonic maceration with 100% whole cluster and 100% ML.
It was aged in neutral oak for two months, sterile filtered and bottled February 3rd 2009.
A softer gamay than the previous vintages.
This fruity tooty wine has characters of strawberry banana and jammy grape.
Low tannins with a long juicey finish.
Great with charcuterie, picnic and burgers.
